  1. INTERCEPT A BOMBING RAID ON BERLIN
  2.  
  3. By February, 1945, fuel shortages,
  4. attrition of experienced pilots, and
  5. the impact of Allied air attacks were
  6. serious threats to the Luftwaffe's
  7. ability to function cohesively.  And 
  8. yet, toward the end of February, the 
  9. entrance of the Me 262 Jagdgeschwader 
  10. (JG 7) into the war brought a signifi-
  11. cant increase of jet activity.  In 
  12. March, most of the high-altitude
  13. bomber interceptions were by Me 262s. 
  14. From mid-March on, these attacks were
  15. made at Gruppe or Staffel strength, 
  16. and their high degree of precision 
  17. indicated that the Luftwaffe still 
  18. had a few "aces up its sleeves".

  20. On March 18, the Eighth Air Force 
  21. launched its heaviest attack in the war
  22. on Berlin, sending over 1,300 bombers
  23. to aid the Russian army's advance from
  24. the east.  JG 7 responded by sending up
  25. 37 Me262s, losing two of these to
  26. defensive bomber fire.  At least five
  27. heavies were claimed by the 262s, while
  28. Berlin's flak claimed another 19
  29. bombers destroyed, with 16 more so
  30. damaged they had to make emergency
  31. landings behind Russian lines.

  34.  
  35. As part of JG 7's elite unit of Me 262
  36. fighters, you are to intercept the stream 
  37. of B-17s approaching various targets in 
  38. Berlin.  Follow your flight leader in for
  39. your initial pass, and make the most of 
  40. your jet's R4M rockets.  Another flight 
  41. of 262s is approaching the bombers for a 
  42. stern attack, so be careful not to hit 
  43. them while shooting at the bombers.
